Injured in a Car Accident? What to Know Before You Wait It Out

“It’s probably just whiplash. I’ll give it a few days.”

Sound familiar?

After a car accident, it’s easy to assume soreness will disappear on its own. Maybe your neck feels a little stiff, your back is achy, or you have a headache that you didn’t have before the crash.

So you wait.

Then a few days turn into a few weeks, and suddenly you're wondering:

Is this normal? Should I be doing something about it? And how does ICBC even work?

If you've recently been involved in a motor vehicle accident, Recharge Physiotherapy + Performance is accepting new ICBC clients in Victoria, and getting started may be simpler than you think.

You Don't Have to Wait for a Doctor's Referral

One of the biggest misconceptions after a car accident is that you need to see your doctor before you can start physiotherapy or chiropractic care.

You don't.

Under ICBC's Enhanced Care system, physiotherapy and chiropractic care are some of the treatments that can be accessed without a doctor's referral during the initial 12 weeks following a crash. Eligible individuals can receive up to 25 physiotherapy or chiropractic treatments during those first 12 weeks.

In other words, if you've been injured in a crash, you don't necessarily need to wait around for another appointment before getting your recovery started.

But What If You "Don't Feel That Bad"?

This is where things can get tricky.

After a collision, your body may not immediately tell you the whole story.

You might feel relatively okay immediately after the accident, only to notice increasing stiffness, soreness, headaches, or difficulty moving comfortably over the following days.

That doesn't mean every ache after a collision is serious. It does mean it's worth paying attention to changes in how your body feels and functions.

An assessment with a clinician can help you understand what's going on and give you a plan for getting back to your normal activities.

Your Recovery Isn't Just About Your Neck

When people think about car accident injuries, whiplash is often the first thing that comes to mind.

But your recovery can involve much more than your neck.

Depending on the collision and your symptoms, you may experience:

  • Neck or back pain

  • Stiffness or reduced mobility

  • Headaches

  • Shoulder or joint pain

  • Muscle soreness

  • Reduced strength

  • Balance or movement difficulties

  • Pain with work, exercise, or everyday activities

And sometimes the biggest problem isn't the pain itself.

It's the fact that you can't do the things you normally do.

Maybe you can't comfortably sit at your desk for a full workday. Maybe your workouts are suddenly off the table. Maybe turning your head while driving is uncomfortable.

At Recharge, We Look at the Bigger Picture

At Recharge Physiotherapy + Performance, we're interested in more than simply asking, “Where does it hurt?”

We want to know:

What can't you do right now that you could do before?

Your clinician will assess your movement, strength, mobility, and overall function to help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

From there, your treatment plan is individualized to you.

Depending on your needs, that could include hands-on treatment, mobility work, strengthening, movement retraining, education, and exercises you can work on between appointments.

Because the goal isn't just to feel better on the treatment table.

The goal is to get you back to your life.

And Yes, ICBC Can Cover Your Treatment

If you've been injured in a crash, the ICBC process can feel like another thing you have to figure out while you're already dealing with an injury.

Fortunately, starting physiotherapy or chiropractic care can be straightforward.

Once you've reported your accident and received your ICBC claim number, you can book your appointment. During the initial 12-week period, eligible treatment is pre-approved by ICBC, and approved providers can bill ICBC directly.

For your first appointment, you'll want to have:

  • Your ICBC claim number

  • Your Personal Health Number (PHN)

  • The date of your accident

  • Your ICBC Recovery Specialist or adjuster's information, if you have it

We'll help guide you through the rest.

You Don't Have to "Wait and See"

There's nothing wrong with giving your body a little time after a collision.

But if you're noticing that something doesn't feel right, you don't have to simply hope it goes away.

Getting assessed doesn't mean you're committing to months of treatment.

It means understanding what's happening, figuring out what you can do about it, and having a plan to move forward.
